If it was a movie, it might be titled "Spring Sojourn for Shark Girl."
The tourist magnet at Canalside will be hauled to an undisclosed site on March 25. Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation President Tom discussed the fate of this popular sculpture, which is displayed at a footbridge at the historic Commercial Strip.
“Her fate is just to get a little bit of touch-up work. She’s been weathered out here in the elements. She’ll be taken away and refurbished somewhat," Dee told WBFO.
Crews will perform some cosmetic work and structural reinforcement, with plans to return Shark Girl to the downtown waterfront on April 22. Dee said the sculpture will remain at its perch near the intersection of Pearl and Perry Streets.
“We don’t have any thoughts about moving her," he said. "We think it’s a great location. We love the way people can enter from this side of the site. It’s the first thing they see and it continues to be a great photo opportunity.”
This is Shark Girl's second restoration since she made her splashy debut at the Inner Harbor 19 months ago as part of a public art collaboration.
