A movement to recognize Native Americans on Columbus Day is attracting more cities around the nation.
What is being called Indigenous People's Day promotes a more accurate historic record and recognizes the history and contributions of indigenous cultures around the country. Cities like Portland, Oregon; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and St. Paul, Minnesota will observe Indigenous People's Day on what many other Americans will still call Columbus Day. Akron, Newstead and Lewiston are just a few towns in New York State that will also support Indigenous People's Day. In Akron, people will gather at Russell Park for a traditional Thanksgiving address along with singing, dancing with speeches.
