Theater Talk: Moss Hart lights up The Shaw Festival

This week Peter and Anthony talk about the great number of theater locales with August events, from Jamestown and Chautauqua in the south, to Artpark, Musicalfare, and The Shaw Festival in the north, to the BUA, Subversive Theatre, and Shakespeare in Delaware Park right here in Buffalo.

Moss Hart's LIGHT UP THE SKY is a play about theater folk and how they can go from zany exuberance (see photo above) only to viciously turn on one another. The Shaw makes very effective use of video, not easy to do in theater. Meanwhile, at Artpark, PETER PAN, the musical, is up only through tonight at 8pm.

Anthony returned from a comedy conference in Jamestown, which is a quaint town worth a visit, as it capitalizes on the Lucille Ball connection and establishes itself as a comedy center. At Chautauqua, where Vivian Benesch is overseeing productions that rival the Shaw, Shakespeare's Henry V opens on August 14.

Cross dressing continues at the BUA's presentation of BETTE AND JOAN: THE FINAL CURTAIN as Jimmy Janowski portrays Joan Crawford sent from hell to ease Bette Davis - played by Chris Standart - to "the other side."  Very funny, a bit campy, but not too risque to take either grandma or some older kids. And, speaking of kids, you really must take them to Shakespeare's TWELFTH NIGHT which continues at Shakespeare Hill through Sunday August 16th with an all male cast playing all the roles. And Subversive Theatre continues with Ionesco's RHINOCEROS at The Manny Fried Playhouse through Saturday August 15.
