Theater Talk: June is bustin' out with Arties and Mormons

The 25th Annual Artie Awards, Buffalo's celebration of local theater, will be held on Monday, June 1 at 710 Main for the first time. The event will be hosted by actors Charmagne Chi, recently seen in "Carousel," and Amy Jakiel, recently in "She Loves Me," with Artvoice theater editor and Theater Talk co-host Anthony Chase.  Doors (and bar) at 710 Main will open at 7 p.m.; the Artie Awards show begins at 8 p.m.  The modest admission fee helps support the Immunodeficiency Clinic at ECMC.

After the traditional red carpet, the Arties will present awards in 19 categories along with career achievement awards, Katharine Cornell awards for visiting artists, and numbers from this year's nominated musicals ("Ain't Misbehavin'," "Assassins," "The Drowsy Chaperone," "Seussical: the Musical," and "She Loves Me").

The following night, Tuesday, June 2 "The Book of Mormon" returns to Shea's Buffalo where it set a record breaking one-week run in 2013. This year's limited one week run will have performances on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at both 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at both 2 and 7 p.m.

Even though Memorial Day weekend is traditionally a time to be thinking of the great outdoors, it's still not too late to catch the following, all of which close this weekend: "How I Got Over" (Paul Robeson Theatre), "In the Red and Brown Water" (Ujima Company), "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (New Phoenix Theatre), "Rust Belt Grotesque" (American Repertory Theatre of WNY), "She Loves Me" (Kavinoky), and "Water by the Spoonful" (Road Less Traveled Theater).

Listen for Theater Talk, Friday morning at 6:45 and 8:45 during Morning Edition.
