Big festival weekend in Buffalo

The 57th Allentown Art Festival attracted big crowds Saturday under a mix of sun and clouds with unseasonably cool temperatures in the low 60s.  Some 375 artists are participating.

The festival's Best of Show award -- and a $1,000 check -- went to artist Arlen Perkins Withey.

Besides Allentown, there are two other major festivals going on this weekend -- the Juneteenth at MLK Park and the Buffalo Riverfest.

The June issue of Buffalo Spree is devoted to the area's festival scene.  Editor Elizabeth Licata says the festivals create a sense of vibrancy.  But she acknowledges they also pose some challenges for the people who live in the neighborhoods where the festivals are held.

"With all festivals, you have litter.  You have people celebrating into the night," Licata said.  "But I think that's not a terrible price to pay for the vibrance these events bring to our community."

We'll have more about Buffalo's summer festivals coming up Monday on the WBFO Press Pass during Morning Edition.

In addition to the festivals, Saturday marked the 14th running of the Susan G. Komen race for the Cure in Delaware Park.  The race attracted 5,000 runners and walkers, some of them women who have survived breast cancer.

This year’s race raised over $400,000 to date in the fight against breast cancer, with more donations expected as additional fundraising continues.
