September 11, 2013 marks the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a flight that crashed in Pennsylvania. Here in Western New York -- several ceremonies and events were held. Outside the American Red Cross building on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo flags have been placed across the lawn.

Red Cross spokesman Jay Bondafede tells WBFO each flag represents the lives lost in the 2001 attacks.

"It's really a moving tribute.  It really kind of brings home the tragedy of that day," said Bonafede. It's an impressive tribute."

The tribute was created with members of the Western New York Families of September 11th.  The flag display includes a large poster with the faces of those who were locally connected to our community that died.

"It really is a way to remember the individuals.  The family also sets aside a separate area to remember those that had connections to western New York," said Bonafede.

The flags will remain on display at the Red Cross through September 22nd.

"It's really a great way to kind of just take a moment to reflect on what happened that day," said Bonafede.
