Chautauqua says goodbye to longtime Religion Director

Sunday was bittersweet at the Chautauqua Institution. As the 2013 season came to a close, so did Joan Brown-Campbell's tenure as Chautauqua's director of religion.

Brown-Campbell says it's time to retire, as she's turning 82-years-old in November. Brown-Campbell has directed Chautauqua's religion programming for the past 14 years. She says her experience at Chautauqua was memorable.

"I love Chautauqua. This has been the best job I've ever had," Brown Campbell said. "But there comes a point in your life when it's time to say we need somebody who is going to bring a new spirit."

Brown-Campbell will be turning over the reins to Reverend Robert Franklin, Jr. He delivered the closing worship service at Chautauqua Sunday.

Franklin is president emeritus of Morehouse College in Atlanta. He will be the first African-American to serve in a top leadership position at Chautauqua in its 140-year history.
