Local college students promotes "I Am Syria" campaign

Street clashes, mob violence and bloodshed continue in Syria as the civil war has spilled into Lebanon this week. Here at home a local University at Buffalo student has been hard at work on the "I Am Syria" campaign.

WBFO & AM-970's Eileen Buckley says the campaign offers support to the people of Syria.

"And I would really, really like to stress that human rights in other countries is just as important as in American that we are born with," said Kerry McPhee.   She recently completed an internship   with the Summer Institute of Buffalo for Human Rights and Genocide Studies.  It was during that internship that she had a chance to learn about the I AM Syria Campaign.

"It's a humanitairn effort to ultimately let the people of Syria know that they are not alone in the fight for just in their country," said McPhee

A campaign described as a humanitarian effort to let those in Syria know they are not alone in their their fight for justice.

"Much of the Arab Spring started because of the social media networks and they were able to reach the international community," said McPhee.

McPhee and others worked to raise awareness by creating a Website, social media and video to help expand the campaign to encourage youth and other citizens about Syria.  http://youtu.be/XCKphsIRGNs

McPhee admits she knew little about what was happening in Syria until her intern program.

"No. I have to be totally honest with you.  I didn't know as much until what I have learned this past month." said McPhee.

McPhee says she tries to talk about the troubled country, even wearing her IAmSyria.org tee shirt on the UB campus or in her hometown of Hamburg often peaking curiosity.

"You would be surprised how many people come up and ask questions, 'what's that I am Syria shirt all about'," said McPhee.
