Last week, following the Arties, Broadway "dimmed the lights" in honor and memory of Terrence McNally (November 3, 1938 – March 24, 2020). McNally was an American playwright, librettist, screenwriter, recipient of five (5!) Tony Awards, and friend of Anthony Chase and his husband Javier Bustillos. (As a matter of fact, McNally along with Chita Rivera were their witnesses as McNally's husband, Tom Kirdahy, performed the ceremony!) McNally won a Tony Award for Best Play for LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! (seen locally presented by Bustillos's Buffalo United Artists) as well as MASTER CLASS (presented locally by MusicalFare). McNally also won Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical for KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN and RAGTIME (also recently at MusicalFare). And McNally received the 2019 Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. On Monday, while Anthony was in Buffalo hosting the 30th Artie Awards (think Tony Awards for Buffalo Theater) Broadway held a memorial service for McNally, but then on Wednesday, Chase and Bustillos were able to attend the "Dimming of the Lights" on Broadway.
It was a moving experience, after which they got to enjoy an evening with stars such as Nathan Lane and Buffalo's own Christine Baranski (who has a star on the "Plaza of the Stars" where Main Street crosses Tupper outside of Shea's 710 Theatre). And, by the way, Javier Bustillos also has a star on the plaza!

The Artie Awards began in 1991 and are held each year to celebrate Western New York's Theatre Community. To be eligible for an Artie, an artist must live and work in the Buffalo area, while a theater must produce work locally, primarily with local artists.
The event is an opportunity to recognize Western New York’s theater arts, as well as, raise funds for the HIV/AIDS & Immunodeficiency Clinic at ECMC. Over the years, through contributions from theatre audiences and proceeds from red ribbon sales, the Arties have raised over $500,000 for AIDS-related charities.
