In his new book, cartoonist Adam Zyglis examines the region's unique features.

On his way to a Pulitzer Prize, Buffalo News cartoonist Adam Zyglis has addressed a number of subjects. Now, he has produced a book that examines one subject that is close to his heart: Buffalo.

Featuring 106 glossy pages of Zyglis' drawings and succinct messages, You Know You're from Buffalo If... touches on regional features that are well-known to those who live here.

"That's one of the wonderful things about our region is that we have the ability to laugh at ourselves at our idiosyncrasies and our flaws," Zyglas said.

"We have a great sense of humor about our town, but as long as it's coming from someone who is from here."

While humor sits at the core of Zyglis' work, the book's satire also addresses some serious topics.

"The person that I am and the journalist and cartoonist that I am I can't put together something like this and not have some brutal honesty sprinkled in," Zyglis said.

One entry spotlights how the "town's resurgence is a tale of two cities" where millions have been spent to make the waterfront sparkle as Buffalo's poverty level remains among the highest in the country.

"I call it (the book) sort of this love note to Buffalo but I had some moments of tough love here. We need to look at the truth in order to get better."
