Canisius College President John Hurley has announced his retirement, scheduled for June 2022.

In an email to the student body, Hurley said he had originally planned to retire in 2019 after 10 years as president. His contract was extended twice, including once in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hurley is the 24th president of Canisius and the first lay president in the Catholic college’s 150-year history. Hurley is a Canisius and Notre Dame Law School graduate who led a career in bankruptcy and lending law before joining the leadership team at the college in 1997.

Canisius board member Dr. Frank Lazarus will lead the search for Hurley's replacement.
