Children's museum proposed for Aud site

The children's museum Explore & More wants to move from East Aurora to a Waterfront location on the site of the old Memorial Auditorium.

In a location even Executive Director Barbara Leggett says is hard to find in East Aurora, 50,000 visitors still arrive each year.

With a Downtown Buffalo location on public transit lines, she says there could be 150,000 on the Aud site.

The museum has applied to the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation to be the cultural center for kids on the Waterfront.

Leggett says children's museums are different.

"It gives us the ability to bring in science, art, math, history, all different things, and really focus on what the children are learning."

Leggett says the museum is such an attraction kids will switch off their electronic toys to come there.

"We really feel like this a great opportunity for Buffalo to create a museum for Buffalo," Leggett said.

"We want to get as many people as possible involved in the development of that master plan."

Early price tags for the museum are between $4 million and $6 million.
