The FBI says there was no valid threat to a Boston-to-Chicago JetBlue flight that landed in Buffalo after a woman called authorities to say a passenger might pose a bomb threat.
Steven Lanser, of the FBI's Buffalo office, says the threat was not real and the incident appears to be the result of a domestic dispute.
A woman in the Boston area called to say there might be a bomb aboard Flight 923. The pilot was told what was happening, but 83 passengers aboard were only told they were diverting to Buffalo-Niagara International Airport.
"While the plane was in flight, there was a call that said that there was a woman on the plane who was suicidal and she might have explosives in her bag or in her luggage that was in the belly of the plane," said Senator Charles Schumer, who was in Buffalo Monday.
A woman passenger was taken off the flight and questioned. She has since been released and is not being charged with any crime. The Joint Terrorism Task Force in Boston located the woman who placed the call and Lanser says charges are pending.
The passenger compartment, baggage and all passengers were checked by bomb sniffing dogs. No explosives were found. The plane resumed its flight and arrived in Chicago shortly after noon.
Also, airport officials disclosed today that a loaded handgun was found in a passenger's carry-on bag Sunday at the Buffalo airport.
The Transportation Security Administration says a security screener discovered the .380-caliber handgun, along with spare bullets, in a Las Vegas-bound man's bag.
The man, from the Buffalo suburb of Elma, was detained temporarily for questioning and then cleared to fly.
