Cheektowaga Police make arrest in last year's town park murder

Cheektowaga Police said they have made an arrest in the murder of a young man killed at Cheektowaga Town Park last May.

19-year-old Ira Watkins was shot to death at the park May 31, 2011.

Police now say they arrested 18-year old Dontre Jones of Cheektowaga.

Authorities say Jones has been indicted by an Erie County Grand Jury for second-degree murder.   Jones is scheduled to be arraigned in county court Thursday.

During the initial investigation, Police had stated that an impromptu water gun fight was organized on Facebook at the park the night of the shooting.  Police had estimated at the time that about 100 people were there and may have witnessed the shooting.

Cheektowaga Town Supervisor Mary Holtz told WBFO News there was a large gathering at the park involving some type of a water fight prior to the shooting.
