Students at the Charles R. Drew Science Magnet School raised over $1,000 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Over the past month students brought in their spare change for the Pennies for Patients campaign.

Guidance Counselor Michael Phinney said they started donating to the cause as a community service project for student leaders, but then the whole school wanted to get involved.

"As I collected money kids would share a story with me about a grandparent, a mother or father that had cancer. I think everybody at some point in their life it's effected them in some way, shape or form so it's our hope to try and make a difference," said Phinney.

Phinney said there were some days where students would give up their money for a treat at lunch just to help out.

"The kids brought in, even if it was just a penny lunch money, allowance. We had a money collecting bin and I'd come to the classroom and there was always that kid that said wait a minute and they'd dig in their wallet and pull out a dollar to donate," said Phinney.

Campaign manager for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Jennifer Kisker said the donation will help those who can't afford cancer treatment services.

"We have over 3,500 patients who do have access to our services and different aid programs, so it makes a difference not only in our community in Erie County, but across the western and central New York chapter," said Kisker.

Kisker said blood cancers don't discriminate, so it makes it that much more important to find a cure.

The third grade class will be rewarded for their efforts. They will be enjoying a class party for raising the most money in the school.
