While many Western New Yorkers were enjoying a relaxing day off from school and work for the Martin Luther King Holiday, others marked Monday by volunteering to serve others.

The MLK Day of Service was held at The King Center Charter School in Buffalo.

Adam Bartoszek is a regional volunteer center manager with the Service Collaborative of Western New York.  He said the volunteers painted the some hallways inside the charter school..

"They are going to be expanding in the future so we painted an entire hallway for them," said Bartoszek.

Other volunteers picked up hammers and built new picnic tables for Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Volunteers also helped shovel snow and assisted the elderly.

"We allocated our volunteer with the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity," said Bartoszek.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'".

"Everybody was happy to serve,"  said Bartoszek.
