Students at Buffalo's McKinley High School presented the City Mission with a check Wednesday, capping off their Holiday Season community service project.  This story actually begins in November, when McKinley students enlisted in the Jr. ROTC collected clothing and turkeys for donation to the City Mission.

After delivering the goods, students decided that wasn't enough.

"We decided to come back to school, get with a couple of students, the National Honor Society, and make a fundraiser.  We brought in coupon books," said Jr. ROTC Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Jerome Thomas.

Through sales of those coupon books, the students raised $2,000.  That, said City Mission manager of volunteers Sue Cervi, could help them serve approximately 1,000 meals.

"It's very impressive, and I think it's important to be here to encourage the students at doing something well and doing something for someone else," Cervi said. "A lot of our students think about the things, especially at Christmas time, what I will be getting, and they were thinking about what they were going to be giving."

The check was presented Wednesday morning as part of a National Honor Society induction ceremony inside McKinley High School.
