New York's "Move Over" Law to Expand January First

The law requiring drivers to change lanes or slow down when passing stopped police vehicles is about to expand.  Beginning New Year's Day, New York State's Move Over Law will expand additional vehicles.

"The expansion of the law is basically going to cover any working vehicle that has a flashing red or amber light," said New York State Trooper Matthew Stegner.  "That's specifically designed for tow truck operators, maintenance workers, DOT workers or any other contractors who are working along the side of a roadway."

Trooper Stegner told WBFO he and other law enforcers have observed compliance by a majority of motorists.  It hasn't entirely eliminated roadside tragedies, however.  Last month, a tow truck operator died after being struck by a passing vehicle on the Thruway near Syracuse.  Back in March, State Trooper Kevin Dobson was struck and killed by a passing motorist during a road stop on the Youngman Highway.
