Students gather for anti-bullying conference

Over 150 middle school students from across Western New York took part in a anti-bullying conference Tuesday.

The conference was put together by The National Federation for just communities to teach students about specific groups targeted by bullies.

Students were able to team up and teach one another how to combat bullying at their own school.

The conference also focused heavily on cyber bullying and how to prevent it.  Some local students talk about the knowledge they hope to bring back to their school.

"I'm here to get some ideas about how to break down the some of the clicks and the stereotyping, and the bullying in our school... and most of all the cyber bullying, because that's really what is going on right now,"  said Nicole Conklin from Springville middle school.

"Not so much bullying goes in  the school, but in the community in general it happens. Like on facebook and myspace and tumblr you don't have to talk face to face so you don't really face as much of a threat, so it's easier to make fun of someone," said Kris Thompson from Heim middle school.

Both students agreed that online bullying is big issue right now. They hope to learn how to prevent it from happening in their school.

NFJC organizers say they realize this is a timely topic since the suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer.  The Williamsville North teenager was a allegedly victimized online for his sexuality and ended up taking his own life.  NFJC is hoping to expand the conference each year to eventually make bullying a thing of the past.
