Occupy Buffalo agrees on rules with city

New terms were reached last week between Occupy Buffalo and the City.  18-different issues were listed in a proposed "term sheet" and Occupy's general assembly approved it.

"Occupied Buffalo shall have the right to return to Niagara square. That language is found in various provisions of this three page agreement," said Michael Kuzma is a senior Legislative aide to Buffalo Common Council president David Francyzk.

Kuzma has attended a number of meetings with the representatives from the City's law department, special events coordinator and Occupy members.

If they leave their camp at Niagara Square for snow removal, they are allowed to return.  But there's a list of other terms that both sides have agreed to as the Occupy demonstrations move forward.

"That there would be no banners placed for example on the McKinley monument. That anyone under the age of 18 would have to the permission or consent of the parent or guardian. No  firearms are dangerous weapons or fireworks allowed on Niagara square grounds," said Kuzma.

The agreement also deals with "standing events" if the Occupy Buffalo movement remains in Niagara Square into the Spring of next year.

"If  Taste of Buffalo was scheduled to come to the square, Occupy Buffalo would have to get permission of the Taste of Buffalo to remain in the Square.  If Taste of Buffalo objected to the presence of Occupy Buffalo, they would leave go to Lafayette Square and then would be able to return once the Taste of Buffalo was over," said Kuzma.

Occupy Buffalo is paying for its own port-a-potty's it had set up in the Square, but promises not to add any more.  They've also pledged to help pay for beautification of the Square and replant any grass that is damaged from their tents and would  reimbursement the city for any electrical costs incurred.
