Victim from fatal fire in Lancaster identified

There was a fatal Friday morning at a high rise senior citizen complex in the Village of Lancaster.

Flames broke out inside a fifth floor apartment at the Lancaster Towers on Pleasant Avenue around 9:30 a.m.

Fire crews from Lancaster and five nearby districts helped battle the blaze.

Fire officials say one male resident in the fifth floor apartment died, but they are still searching for the cause.
Lancaster Police say 76-year-old Richard Clabeaux was found in a lift chair.

The fire caused smoky conditions inside the building forcing residents on some upper floors to be evacuated.

WBFO News spoke  Cynthia White.  Her elderly 83-year-old aunt is a 15-year resident of the building.

"All the apartments were evacuated.  Some were taken to town hall, some where taken to seniors and some were in the first floor activity room," said White.

About 220-seniors live in the building that houses nine floors. There were no other injuries reported.

Another resident, Lucy Krupa lives on the first floor, praised firefighters for their quick work.

"All I know is I was cleaning my refrigerator and the fire alarms went off and then the Police and the fire, they were very wonderful. I can't thank them enough," said Krupa.
