A major early season snow storm has hit parts of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and southern New England.

Heavy, wet snow has blanketed areas of the northeast, downing trees and knocking out power to thousands of homes.  There are also delays at some airports.

Governor Andrew Cuomo active New York’s State’s Emergency Operations Center as the early-season winter storm moves into parts of New York.   About 1.1 million homes in the northeast are without power.

In New York State the Governor’s office says 261,338 are without power.

"As heavy snow, ice, and rain fall on parts of the state, we have mobilized the resources of state agencies to ensure the safety of residents and a timely clean-up," Governor Cuomo said. "The roads are slippery and many trees and power lines have come down, so I urge motorists to avoid driving in areas affected by the storm and encourage all New Yorkers to take necessary precautions."

The Governor directed the New York State Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to open the State Emergency Operations Center to ensure resources and equipment are positioned for an appropriate response to the storm. OEM offices in Dutchess, Nassau, and Orange County have also been activated.

JFK International Airport in New York City was reporting delays for inbound flights.  Newark International also reported delays.   No flights were being allowed to depart at LaGuardia Airport late Saturday afternoon.

In the Buffalo Niagara region,  just a slight chance of rain and snow showers is in the forecast for Saturday night with a local around 33.
