Arrest in fatal hit & run in Buffalo

Buffalo Police made an arrest in a fatal hit and run accident that occurred earlier this month following an intensive investigation.  

32-year-old Michael Held of North Tonawanda was arrested Tuesday night.

48-year-old April Smith of Buffalo was struck by a vehicle along the 1100 block of Broadway on October 2 and died from her injuries.   Held is accused of leaving the accident. He was arraigned Wednesday.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said Held turned himself in Tuesday night.   

"He was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal injury accident.  This investigation continues. There may be more charges forthcoming in the days and weeks ahead," said Derenda.

Lt. Joseph Pierchala is with the Police  Accident Investigation Unit said the department received tips from the public on a green SUV capture in a surveillance video.  

"Through all these tips and leads we were able to zero on Mr. Held," said Lt. Pierchala.

Investigators also followed leads with parts suppliers and auto repair shops, They seized physical evidence.

Held  is being held on $750,000 bail.  

The Erie County District Attorney is expected to present the case to a grand jury.
