Another movement is gaining in strength that targets wealthy Americans. Several citizen organizations are teaming up under the banner of "99 New York".
They gathered at the SEIU offices on Main Street in Buffalo Monday to launch their campaign.
From health care to housing -- one by one -- speakers lined up to voice their opposition against huge tax breaks proposed for the wealthiest citizens.
"Millionaires pay your fair share!"
Roz Hampton is member of Citizen Action and the Coalition of Black Trade unionists.
“We aren't asking for corporate CEO's and big banks to bail us out. We just want them to pay their fair share,” said Hampton.
99 New York is urging the Governor and state legislature to prevent the tax breaks for the wealthy.
Sara Gordon is with the housing organization PUSH Buffalo.
“A $5 billion tax break. The 99% of this nation is saying that ain't right. We represent the 99% of this country and we are here to say enough is enough,” said Gordon. "It had nothing to do with politics, had nothing to do with gaining or losing any party lines. It had nothing to do with any sort of cash contributions. ”
The so-called "millionaire's tax" on New Yorkers with incomes over $200,000 is set to expire December 31st.
Governor Cuomo says won't allow the tax. A Siena College poll released yesterday says 72% of New Yorker voters support the tax to avoid more state budget cuts.
