Getzville, NY – Residents of Weinberg Campus in Getzville spent part of Saturday, September 10th creating 32 care packages for U.S. troops.

All of the items were donated by residents and the community as part of Weinberg Campus "Summer Salute to Soldiers".

Each care package included handwritten letters to the troops which were written by the residents, volunteers and staff. The care packages are being shipped to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Three Weinberg Campus employees have family members serving overseas. They will be among the recipients of care packages for their units.

The residents who organized the event are members of the Gilda Tunis Soldiers Fund which was founded in honor of the late Gilda Tunis, a Weinberg resident, who started the effort two years ago to help bring letters, personal care items and packages to soldiers in need. Those efforts have now generated over 127 care packages sent to the troops.

Weinberg resident Warren Rathke and several members of his volunteer fire department, Wrights Corners, volunteered to lend a hand. Girl Scouts from Troop #18 also donated their time and helped hold boxes for residents with wheelchairs or walkers while they filled the care packages.
