Buffalo School board begins process to remove Williams

By Eileen Buckley, Ashley Hassett & Bert Gambini

Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Board of Education voted late Tuesday afternoon to begin the process to terminate Schools Superintendent James Williams.

The board met in executive session. Board members voted not to terminate the contract of Williams at Tuesday's meeting and instead will return to the issue this Friday at 4 p.m.

The Board discussed what steps would be needed to terminate the contract of Williams under a no fault provision. Under the new fault clause, both the school board and superintendent can part ways peacefully.

The board voted six to three in favor of pushing Williams out sooner then later.

School Board Member Chris Jacobs said the board will hold a special meeting this Friday to take another vote on Williams' future.

Jacobs said if board members do vote this Friday to terminate Williams, then an interim superintendent could be in place by next week.

School board member Sharon Belton-Cottman doesn't agree. She said pushing the superintendent out weeks before the new school year begins would have a negative effect on students.
