Buffalo, NY – Buffalo Police Narcotics detectives raided a West Side home Monday night uncovering illegal guns. WBFO's Eileen Buckley says the Police Commissioner and Mayor stood in front of a home at 301 West Avenue to announce details of an arrest.
Armed with a search warrant, detectives discovered five guns, including two assault weapons, a small amount of marijuana and some cash inside the West Avenue home.
Police commissioner Daniel Derenda said 24-year-old Cornell Virgil-Mack who lived at the address was arrested. He's charged with criminal possession of a weapon and felony possession of marijuana.
One of the weapons was stolen from Chautuauqua County. Police are also looking into possible federal charges.
Commissioner Derenda said for those living next door to the West Avenue house, it was difficult.
Mayor Brown said his administration continues to make city neighborhoods safer. He told reporters drug raids send a strong message to criminals.
The Mayor said overall crime is down in the city by about 10% shootings dropped by about 50%.
