Shooting of Arizona Representative elicits local response

By Chris Jamele

Buffalo, NY – An apparently politically motivated shooting rampage outside of an Arizona supermarket has left nineteen people hit by gunfire. Among them is recently re-elected Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords.

Giffords has undergone surgery for a severe head wound, but doctors are guardedly optimistic that she will recover. Federal Judge John Roll is among those who were killed in the melee.

Congressman Chris Lee, R-Clarence, offered his reaction to hearing the news about the shooting.

"I'm shocked," Lee said. "It tells you how tenuous it is when you're out in the public eye."

Congressman Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, also released a statement.

"It is a tragic day when a Representative and her staff are personally attacked and seriously injured while fulfilling the basic duties of meeting with constituents and serving their community," Higgins said. "This is a senseless and heartbreaking assault on those dedicated to public service."

Twenty-two year old Jared Loughner is in custody for the shooting after he was wrestled to the ground by bystanders at the public gathering. A semi-automatic rifle was also confiscated at the scene.

Authorities are investigating the possibility that Loughner was not acting alone.
