Buffalo, NY – The City's Human Resource Commissioner terminated last September remains on the job. Mayor Byron Brown is still waiting for a hearing officer's recommendation on Karla Thomas.

"I have not received the recommendation from Michael Battle, who served as the hearing officer in that matter," said Mayor Brown.

Mayor Brown issued termination papers to Thomas four months ago, but Thomas remains on the city pay roll in her more than $90,000 a year job.

"I have received, however, volumes and volumes of transcript from the process we were forced to move forward as called for by the City Charter," said Mayor Brown.

A mandate in the City charter gave Thomas the right to a public termination hearing. However, that hearing ended in early November. The Mayor will make the final decision.

"After I receive those recommendations, coupled with reading the very voluminous transcripts of the hearing process, that is legally established I will than make a final decision," said Mayor Brown.

Thomas was given her termination notice after she failed to stop benefit payments of more than $2-million to deceased individuals. A costly mistake for city taxpayers.
