Hopkins Road repairs underway

Amherst, NY – After years of deterioration, portions of Hopkins Road in North Amherst are being repaired. The Erie County Department of Public Works is beginning work on preparing Hopkins for repaving.
Public Works Commissioner Jerry Sentz says the first step is stabilizing the portion of the road near the bank of Ransom Creek.
"We're going to be adding some drainage pipe and attempting to get the water off the ground and into the creek as fast as we can. Then along the edge of the bank we're going to basically clear the vegetation off and we'll be adding some special plant material that will help stabilize that bank. The roots will weave deep and weave together to help fortify the bank," Sentz said. It will help absorb a lot of the water out of the bank, which is what is needed to get the water out of the bank so that it doesn't slide so much."
County officials say the initial repairs to Hopkins Road will be finished within the next few weeks, allowing both lanes south of Smith Road to reopen.
