UB explores new approach against the flu

By Chris Jamele

Buffalo, NY – The employment of nanotechnology in the research of controlling viral infections has given researchers at the University at Buffalo hope of a new approach to tackling the flu.

Working with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UB medical students have found that gold nanoparticles carrying slivers of genetic material can help the body battle viruses and stifle the development of secondary infections. The research is ongoing, but success could reduce the need for a reliance on vaccines.

A report on the project has been published with the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
