The acronym stands for Veterans Helping to Empower Returning and Disabled Veterans. Vets HERD was formed by area veterans and other community supporters. It is run by a board of 10 volunteers.

Christina Abt is a spokeswoman for the group. She said they hope to bring all the different veterans advocacy groups that already exist together as a coalition.

Abt said they will reach out to other organizations, asking them to participate in the coalition. She said Vets HERD also will take on initiatives of its own when it sees the need. She said education is a key area of interest. Vets HERD plans to partner with D'Youville and Daemen colleges to establish coordinated access to education for vets.

The launch Saturday of Vets HERD will include a performance by the Maritime Charter School Drill Team, as well as other music and a video tribute to veterans. The celebration begins at 10:00 A.M. at the Connecticut Street Armory. The public is invited to attend.
