County's Air One to Assist City

By Mark Wozniak

Buffalo, NY – The Erie County Sheriff's Department and Buffalo Police have announced a new collaboration.

Buffalo Police Commissioner McCarthy Gipson says Erie County's Air One helicopter will be used to help the department's Mobile Response Unit and New York State Police Task Force, which deals with gangs, guns, and drugs in the city.

Sheriff Timothy Howard says he's pleased to be able to offer use of the aircraft to the city.

"A search made by a helicopter takes a fraction of the time that would be taken by ground units," Howard said. "It uses far fewer resources, improves safety for those on the ground and can search large areas swiftly and extremely efficiently."

The new agreement takes effect immediately.
