More Students Meeting State's English Standards

By Mark Scott

Albany, NY – More students in New York are meeting state standards in English. The State Education Department released new data Thursday on just how well students performed on English tests given earlier this year.

The data show 77 percent of students in grades three through eight achieved the standards in English, up from 68 percent last year. But when the actual test scores are examined, the gains are much smaller.

In Buffalo, more than 54 percent of students in grades three through eight are meeting the state English standards, up from just 30 percent four years ago.

Four years ago, the Regents imposed a curriculum that sets clear expectations for instruction in English.
