GM Plants Shutdowns Will Affect Local Auto Industry Operations

By Mark Wozniak

Buffalo, NY – More layoffs are coming as General Motors will shut down 13 assembly plants for up to 11 weeks this summer. GM says the shutdowns will help control high dealer inventories and bring production in line with sales.

The summer plant closures are expected to have a ripple effect on hard-pressed suppliers and local businesses such as Delphi in Lockport.

The GM Powertrain plant in Tonawanda is not on the GM shutdown list. But officials say the local plant might be affected for a four to eight week period of reduced production, or even brief shutdowns depending on the needs of the factories it supplies.
