Recovery of Bodies from Crash Site Complete

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – The recovery process from Flight 3407 is transferring from the crash site to the Erie County morgue.

The grueling and difficult task of identifying the bodies of Flight 3407 is underway. County Health Commissioner Anthony Billittier says crews from the Medical Examiner's office are going through every piece of debris by hand.

There have been positive identifications on some of the remains. Dr. Scott Zimmerman is overseeing efforts at the County morgue. He says there is still a great deal work to do in making positive identifications.

Zimmerman says only when needed will they use DNA samples to assist in the identification process.

Health officials says crews wrapped up removal of remains at the site Tuesday in advance of changing weather conditions. However, Billittier says the Medical Examiner assigned to the crash scene continues working in the basement of the Long Street home that was destroyed.

Billittier says the ultimate goal is reunited the families with the remains of their loved ones.
