Thousands Lose Power as Storm Batters Western New York

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – This morning's strong winds caused power outages for an estimated 50-thousand utility customers in Western New York. Utility crews are working to restore power, but there are no firm estimates of when all service will be restored.

A cold front moved in as forecast during the early morning hours. Winds gusted up to 70 miles per hour. And temperatures plunged. Heavy, wet snow began falling during the pre-dawn hours. That caused some school districts, including Buffalo schools, to close today. And the strong winds brought down some bricks at a laundromat-apartment complex on Massachusetts Avenue in the city.
