Wide Receiver Naaman Roosevelt, the Hail Mary? play in which the Bulls defeated Temple

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – For the first time in its history, the University at Buffalo football team will play in the International Bowl game Saturday in Toronto, Canada. The UB Bulls will battle against the Connecticut Huskies at the Rogers Centre. The Bulls captured their bowl berth after winning their first MAC Championship.

But 50 years ago the Bulls earned a chance to play in the Tangerine Bowl in Florida. However, the Bulls never played that game. The team decided not to play when it learned that two of its African-American players would not be allowed to participate in the game because of segregation laws. The team unanimously rejected the Bowl bid to play.

That makes the 2008 UB Bulls team the first to play in a bowl game. The team is lead by UB's head coach, 43 year old Turner Gill.

A reminder for those fans heading to Toronto for Saturday's game. Make sure you have proper identification to cross the borders. American travelers will need a photo ID. A valid driver's license can be used, but they will also need a birth certificate or may use a passport. International travelers heading into Canada would require a valid passport or visa.

In other UB Bulls news, the public is being asked to cast their vote. UB is one of four finalists competing for a $100,000 scholarship to be donated by Pontiac. The Bulls dramatic game-winning "Hail Mary" play, in which they defeated Temple, has them vying for the Pontiac Game Changing Performance of the Year.
