Buffalo, NY – For the first time in three years, 34 members of the Buffalo Fire Department were promoted Thursday.

The Buffalo Fire Department says this batch of new promotions will actually save the city money. Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo says the promotions will help reduce some of the soaring overtime costs that have been occurring within the department.

Firefighters and their families gathered for a ceremony at Engine 21 on Elmwood Avenue. The promotions included Division chief, battalion chiefs, captains and Lieutenants. Those promoted will receive higher pay, but they are also filling vacant positions.

Mayor Byron Brown says despite difficult fiscal times, the city managed to fund the promotions. The city is also planning to hire 35 new firefighters by next year.
