Healthcare Expo Assists People Living with HIV

By Amanda Tourot

Buffalo, NY – A healthcare services expo called Living Positively was held in Buffalo Wednesday for people in the area who are HIV positive. The event raised awareness and showcased services available for those living with the disease.

Dr. Guthrie Birkhead is Deputy Commissioner for the Office of Public Health in New York. Birkhead says HIV and AIDS have not disappeared from the area.

"I think the first thing to say is that HIV remains a problem in the state and Western New York in particular," Birkhead said. "People no longer see it in the headlines all the time. They know treatment is available."

Birkhead said the state is taking new initiatives to integrate testing for HIV and sexually transmitted diseases.

Birkhead was awarded at the expo for his work in the fight against AIDS.
