Amherst Town Board Approves Rezoning for New Development

By WBFO News

Amherst, NY – The Amherst Town Board Monday night approved the rezoning of a stretch of Maple Road for a controversial plan for a mixed use development.

About 60 people spoke at the town meeting, held in the Sweet Home High School auditorium. The town board vote was four to three.

The Benderson Development Corporation proposal has had strong vocal supporters, as well as opponents, mostly nearby residents. The opposition is expected to take legal action to prevent the project on the site of the old Buffalo Shooting Club.

The so-called "lifestyles" center would feature retail outlets, restaurants and a hotel in a park-like setting.

The project is expected to cost $44 million.
