New City Surveillance Camera Nabs Suspects

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – A new city surveillance camera led to the arrests of five burglary suspects just hours after it was installed.

The camera was installed Tuesday afternoon across from the Neighborhood Food Mart on Ontario Street. By the overnight hours, it alerted police to a crime. First, it recorded Buffalo Fire responding to a blaze inside the food mart. But by 3 a.m. the camera operator observed individuals entering the building. Police Commissioner McCarthy Gipson says that's when 9-1-1 was dispatched.

D-District officers arrived on the scene within nine minutes making very quick arrests.

Two of the five arrested were juveniles. They were released into the custody of their mother. Any further action against them would be handled in Family Court.
