Book Sale Offers Bargains and Scholarships

By Joyce Kryszak

Amherst, NY – For the past 54 years, used books have helped countless women and girls in Western new York pay for college. UB's branch of the American Association of University Women provides scholarships every year with money raised from its annual used book sale.

The tables are set up and the books are piling on. Roughly 150,000 books will be collected and sorted over the next few weeks to get ready for the early June sale.

It is a much anticipated event for book lovers looking for a bargain. But it is an even better bargain for young women looking for some help with college expenses. The AAUW gives out more than $40,000 worth of scholarships each year. Janet Fowler is president elect of UB's AAUW. She said there are a number of scholarships available.

June 1 is the deadline for the next round of applications.

Fowler said they try to honor as many requests for need based scholarships as possible. Anyone who wants more information or wants to apply can go online at www.aauw.buffalo.edu

And if you are merely hunting for a bargain on books, those will be available June 4 - June 8. Fowler said that except for collectibles, all books are priced at either fifty cents or a dollar. She said there will be a lot to choose from.

If you have books you would like to donate, they can be dropped off during the day at the book sale site at 3386 Sheridan Drive in Amherst.
