Pond Hockey Tournament Moves Downtown

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – Organizers of Saturday's Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Tournament have changed locations due to unsafe ice conditions.

The tournament has shifted from Hoyt Lake at Delaware Park to the Erie Basin Marina parking lots in downtown Buffalo.

Hoyt Lake was consider the ideal location for this pond hockey event. But despite the cold weather, some areas of the lake remain unfrozen. David Grohusko is the customer and field marketing manager with Labatt. He says some parts of the lake were under three inches thick making it unsafe for players.

But the Erie Basin Marina parking lots were a backup site for the event. With the help of Erie County Parks, crews have worked quickly to create a rink at the lots. County Parks Commissioner James Hornug says the flat surface lots made it easy to create rinks.

16 teams will competing Saturday in the Pond Hockey tournament from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M. The event is free to the public.
