Former Buffalo Radio Host Tom Campbell on Success of New England Sports Teams

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – For pro sports fans who live in New England, these are the best of times. The Patriots are hoping to go undefeated by winning Sunday's Super Bowl. The Red Sox are the reigning World Series champions. And the Boston Celtics are in first place. Here in Buffalo, the Sabres are in a struggle to make the playoffs while the Bills missed out on the post-season for the eighth straight year.

WBFO's Mark Scott explores this contrast with someone who has lived in both areas. For ten years in the 1990s, Tom Campbell was the morning host on Buffalo radio station WYRK. Tom and his family moved to Providence in 2001 where he's been hosting the morning show on WWBB radio.

Mark reached Tom in Providence to talk about the "fandemonium" in New England. Are fans still excited as ever or is winning becoming old hat? -- In New England, Red Sox fans hate the Yankees. And Yankees fans hate the Red Sox. The rivalry is intense. In the Super Bowl -- it's Boston vs. New York yet again. Are you seeing the same intensity? -- So, where will you be watching Sunday's game? -- Even the Celtics are doing well. Could New England be celebrating a third major sports championship in a year? -- Now your ten years in Buffalo coincided with the most success Buffalo teams ever enjoyed -- four Super Bowl appearances, the Bills in the playoffs nearly every year. The Sabres went to the Stanley Cup finals. Then you move to Providence. The Pats win three Super Bowls and the Red Sox jinx is broken. Are you a lucky charm? -- Do you still root for the Bills and Sabres? Tom Campbell is a former Buffalo radio personality who now works in Providence. He joined us from his radio station W-W-B-B.
