Man Sentenced to Prison for Marital Rape

By Joyce Kryszak

Buffalo, NY – A Buffalo man was sentenced Friday morning in Supreme Court to 50 years in jail for the first case of marital rape tried in the county since 1983.

Anthony Woods, 42, will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars for brutally raping and sodomizing his wife. The couple, who met in church, were married for only ten days when the first rape occurred. He was convicted in May on several counts of sexual assault.

Woods previously served ten years for three other convictions of sexual assault on other women. He stared at his wife as she asked the judge to keep Woods from being a threat to anyone else. Assistant District Attorney Lisa Bloch Rodwin says the sentence sends a strong message.

Woods smiled at Justice Deborah Heandeges as she imposed the maximum sentence.

Defense attorney Joel Daniels says they will appeal.
