Work Begins on Dismantling 190 Tolls

By Mark Wozniak

Buffalo, NY – Work finally began yWednesday on the dismantling of the Niagara Thruway toll barrier at Ogden Street.

The State Thruway Authority says motorists should expect lane shifts as the work continues.

Erie County clerk Kathy Hochul was behind the push to have the tolls removed. Hochul says pressure is continuing to have other area toll booths removed or relocated.

"There are the Grand Island tolls. In Williamsville, residents have been waiting since 1996 for the barriers to be moved," Hochul said. "There are still tolls within the commuting range of Western New York. That doesn't exist elsewhere in upstate New York."

After the Ogden Street barrier is removed, the Black Rock facility will come down. The entire project is scheduled to be finished by September.
