Bishop Says Selling Diocesan Mansion Would Not Stop Church Closings

By Joyce Kryszak

Buffalo, NY – As the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo moves forward with plans to close churches and schools, some area Catholics say the Diocese should sell off valuable property, such as the Bishop's mansion, first.

The debate intensified last weekend following a front page article in the "Buffalo News." Tuesday, Bishop Edward Kmiec publicly addressed the matter. He says such a sale is not out of the question. But he's not sure it's the best choice.

The Bishop says other suggested locations where he could live, such as the rectory of Saint Joseph Cathedral, might not be good option for high-level fundraising and other social functions.
