Fr. Gary Bagley, Longtime Youth Minister, Dies at 59

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – A popular Catholic priest in Buffalo died unexpectedly this week. Fr. Gary Bagley served as a youth minister in the Catholic Diocese for 25 years. He was 59.

Fr. Bagley had a way of talking to teens without being preachy. He would often say that he wanted all teens to be "holy, happy and healthy." From 1986 through 2001, Fr. Bagley served as director of the Diocesan Youth Department.

Fr. Jack Ledwon, pastor of St. Joseph University Church in Buffalo, says Fr. Bagley influenced the lives of thousands of young people in the diocese.

Fr. Ledwon and Fr. Bagley were seminarians in the late 60s and early 70s. Fr. Ledwon said his longtime friend and colleague always maintained his youthful enthusiasm.

After retiring as youth director in 2001, Fr. Bagley was appointed pastor of St. Benedict's Church in Eggertsville, where he served until his death. Bishop Edward Kmiec will preside at Fr. Bagley's funeral Saturday morning at 10:00 at St. Benedict's.
