Five East Side Projects Get Federal Boost

By Mike Greco

Buffalo, NY – Five projects on Buffalo's East Side are receiving a federal funding boost. U.S. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter appeared in the Queen City Monday to announce that more than $1 million in federal funding will be provided for infrastructure improvements, arts and education revitalization, and the creation of new jobs.

Slaughter says $472,000 will be used to help knock down abandoned buildings on the East Side that have become havens for crime. New homes and businesses will be built. Slaughter also said that Buffalo's history must not be forgotten while these improvements are taking place.

"At the same time, we are tapping into the wealth of community resources available, we must also be careful to preserve our communities treasures. Buffalo has some of the most impressive architecture of any city in this country. Protecting the historical nature and artistic beauty is not just the right thing to do, it is a powerful revitalization tool," said Slaughter.

Slaughter said she also believes in the importance of arts education, and that statistics have shown students learn better with an arts curriculum.
